What is ‘IVA’ and how does it affect my vehicle import?

IVA (Individual Vehicle Approval) or formally known as SVA (Single Vehicle Approval) is a Government test carried out to all vehicles imported into the UK from outside the European Union. Essentially it is a strict test of the vehicles components to ensure to meets conformity for use on UK roads.

Without undergoing this test and achieving the required standards, you will not be presented with a Ministers approval certificate (MAC) and will not be able to register your vehicle for the road. Please remember this is a test of vehicles design, not condition.

Many components of the vehicle are inspected, some of which are, and not limited to;

  • Vehicle design weights
  • Vehicle glazing
  • Tyres
  • Vehicle Noise
  • Anti Thief devices
  • Seat belt anchorages and condition
  • Mirror field of vision
  • Modification from Standard
  • Speedometer accuracy
  • Function of ABS systems
  • Vehicle emissions
  • Interior and exterior projections
  • Braking performance
  • All external lighting
